Consumer confidence improving

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Some encouraging numbers concerning your confidence in the economy. The Conference Board says it's the highest it's been in almost five years.

October's consumer confidence index was still almost 18 points below what's looked at as a healthy economy, but it's the highest reading since February 2008 and that shows consumers are optimistic.

At the height of the recession, if you were fortunate to have a job, you held on to it tight. But after steady job growth over the summer, workers are starting to feel more comfortable.

“I myself am thinking should I switch employment because there are some jobs still out there. Not only are there new jobs but there's jobs that need to be filled,” said Leo Rosa who lives in the Berkshires.

“Yeah, things are looking better. I feel like things are going better as far as work. More overtime,” said Kenny Smith of Springfield.

Consumer confidence is at an almost five-year high; promising news for people--and their wallets-- heading into the holiday season. Many in western Massachusetts feel back on track after more than a year of weather crises, fortunately spared by Sandy.

“Especially here in Springfield given the weather conditions and what just happened in New York it's horrendous. I think the holidays are going to help us a little not to forget about what's happening but feel a little more comfortable,” said Arnold Cox of Springfield.

The economy will be a key issue on many voters' minds heading as they visit the polls Tuesday, and not everyone is feeling so confident.

“I'm still seeing high gas prices and I haven't been able to execute my travel plans like I wanted to. I'm being very careful with how I spend my money,” said Ken Schaub of Springfield.

Another reason some feel more comfortable heading into the holiday season is the possibility of holiday bonuses, where in recent years that wasn't even a consideration for many workers.
