SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Convenience store customers scared off a masked man who pulled a knife in an attempt to rob an Indian Orchard variety store in Springfield Thursday night.

Springfield Police Captain Cheryl Clapprood told 22News, there were ten to 15 customers in the Orchard Variety on 152 Main Street Thursday night, when a man wearing a kerchief over his face walked in at about 7:20 p.m.

"When he pulled the knife, they chased him out.  I guess the public is sick of crime!" Captain Clapprood said.

Clapprood told 22News the suspect left without any cash.  "It was an attempted armed robbery.  He was seen getting into a grey SUV."

Captain Clapprood told 22News that members of the Springfield Police Detective Bureau were looking at surveillance video in an effort to identify the would-be robber.

No one was hurt.
