Police identify elderly bicyclist killed in Westfield traffic accident

86-year-old John Kurty hit by pickup truck

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Westfield Police say 86-year-old John Kurty died Tuesday night after he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle on Western Avenue.

Westfield Police Lt. Michael LaCroix told 22News Kurty died at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, hours after he was hit by a pickup truck.

Kurty was hit on Western Avenue just before 2:00 pm Tuesday in front of Westfield State University's athletic field house.

The bicycle and truck were headed in the same direction.

Police closed a section of Western Avenue for several hours after the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.  Lt LaCroix told 22News it is unlikely the driver will be charged.
