SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Doris Beauregard-Shecrallah says it is easy to show appreciation for police officers, thru a simple, "thank you" or a handshake.
She knows the sacrifice that police make. She is the widow of Alain Beauregard, a Springfield police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Beauregard and fellow officer Michael Schiavina were fatally shot during a traffic stop on Stebbins Street in November, 1985.
Until this week, when officer Kevin Ambrose was shot and killed during a call over a restraining order, Beauregard and Schiavina had been the last two Springfield police officers killed while on the job.
Beauregard-Shecrallah says every day police are putting their lives on the line, for the people they serve. She says people often don't realize how many close calls police officers have. And it's something she thinks people should remember when they see officers on the city streets.
Since that tragic day in 1985, Beauregard Shecrallah has been involved with supporting other police survivor families and been actively involved with the group COPS, which stands for Concerns of Police Survivors.
Every year she has attended the annual Memorial services held locally to remember police officers who lost their lives on the job. And at those events she reminds people, not to forget the dangers that police face daily.
