CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Monday is the day Davitt Bridge drivers have been dreading; after a slight delay, the bridge closed mid-morning.
The closure is an inconvenience, but some Chicopee residents just want to get it over with. The closing was planned for an earlier date, but was delayed so that the city could get the needed environmental permits.
First, they will resurface the road over the canal to the entrance of the Ames Privilege Apartments.
Then, they will demolish the existing bridge and build the new one.
The entire process will take about two years. In the mean time, the only way to get across the Chicopee River and the canal is by using the temporary footbridge.
Cars should detour onto I-391 and take Exit 2 into Chicopee Center. For a look at some other alternate routes into downtown Chicopee, visit easytoenterchicopeecenter.com
