SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Hearings will be held Wednesday, in Boston and Washington, on the national fungal meningitis outbreak, that has been linked to a Massachusetts pharmacy.
On Beacon Hill, legislators will take a closer look at the state's oversight of the New England Compounding Center in Framingham. The pharmacy distributed contaminated steroid injections over the summer, that sickened nearly 500 people, and is being blamed for over 30 deaths since September.
The state pharmacy board has recently been under fire for how it handled complaints against the company in the past.
Meantime in Washington, a U. S. House committee will hear testimony on Wednesday from the pharmacy's owner and the Massachusetts interim health commissioner.
Since this outbreak, lawmakers have been trying to get tighter regulations in place for compounding pharmacies. But there have been discrepancies between state and federal law.
Many are hoping these hearings will provide more insight into how an outbreak, like this, can be avoided in the future.
