HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Democrat Aaron Vega will represent Holyoke in the Massachusetts House of Representatives after defeating Republican Linda Vacon and independent Jerry Hobert in a three-way race to replace longtime State Rep. Michael Kane.
With 100% of precincts reporting, Vega received 9,514 votes, or 61% of the total votes cast. Vacon received 3,200 votes, or 20%, and Hobert received 2,933 votes, or 19%.
Kane, a six-term Democrat, retired earlier this year after getting a job with Columbia Gas of Massachusetts. He was being challenged in the primary this year by Vega, and his name still appeared on the September ballot despite his retirement.
Vega and Vacon are both members of the Holyoke City Council, while Hobert is a political newcomer.
The 5th Hampden District encompasses the entire city of Holyoke.
