Disasters a reminder to check your insurance policy

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Representatives from the Massachusetts Division of Insurance were in downtown Springfield Tuesday as a reminder for homeowners to update their policies.

Over the past couple of years, western Masachusetts has learned just how fast catastrophic weather can cause widespread damage. How fast your rebuilding process takes often depends on what type of insurance policy you have in place.

Commissioner of Insurance Joe Murphy said it’s important to take a fresh look at the insurance you have, in order to ensure you’re properly covered.

"People tend to look at their insurance policy when they buy their home or rent their condo. They might stay there for a decade and they won't look to improve that policy, even if they've done their kitchen over or made improvements,” Murphy said.

Anyone with insurance questions can call the Division of Insurance Consumer Hotline at (877) 563-4467. You can also find more information at the Division’s website at mass.gov/doi
