CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Chicopee economy is getting a boost, and food shoppers in the city now have a new grocery store.
The Aldi Supermarket on Memorial Drive held its grand opening Thursday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Germany-based chain features discount pricing, carrying more than 1,400 of the most frequently-purchased grocery and household items. Most of these products are sold under the company’s own brand. Aldi is able to compete with the larger chains through that and streamlined operations.
“We pass those savings on to the consumer,” Aldi Vice President Bruce Persohn said. “All of our brands are our own, Aldi-exclusive brands, and that helps to keep the prices low as well.”
Aldi has 1,200 stores in 32 states; most of them located in the Midwest and the East Coast. In addition to the new Chicopee location, they currently have stores in Springfield, Hadley, and Enfield, Connecticut.
