SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - AAA and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency have some Automobile Safety Tips.

MEMA urges you to keep your gas tank at least half full, have appropriate tires for the season and the conditions.

Have a windshield scraper in the vehicle, and a well-stocked Winter Emergency Car Kit.

"I do have a blanket.  I do have extra water, and I do have a little shovel.  And a snow shovel,” said Ely Dunn.

"The biggest problem around here in Springfield is you got a lot of crazy drivers.  You got to watch out for them,” Yolanda Lopez said.

"I always keep a small shovel in the car in the trunk.  And have some good wiper blades for the winter.  And have a full tank of gas,” Ivan Gonzalez told 22News.

Those are all necessary and recommended items to keep in the car during the winter months.
MEMA says your well-stocked Winter Emergency Car Kit should contain:

  • A Flashlight with extra batteries
  • A charged cell Phone and a charger.
  • A basic first-Aid kit and necessary medications.
  • Water, a blanket and extra clothes.
  • A shovel and sand and/or road salt... kitty litter works for improving traction.
  • Jumper cables
