SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield police say that a downtown bar has been written up for violations, following a fight that involved an estimated 60 people early Saturday morning.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that the Fat Cat Bar and Grill was written-up to the Springfield License Commission in the aftermath of the fight, which resulted in the injuries of four city police officers.
One of the injured officers was Eleni Melendez, who was hired to work a security detail at the club. Delaney says Melendez jumped in to break up a fight inside the bar between two women, when she was punched from behind in the head, and then jumped, punched, and kicked by others.
At the same time, another officer was attacked, Delaney says, and neither were able to call for help. Melendez was able to key her portable hand unit, and the dispatcher could tell that the officers were in distress. All cars were called to the bar, and as police arrived, the brawl had grown to an estimated 60 people fighting. Those in the brawl also fought with the arriving officers, and Delaney says that in total, four officers were injured.
Melendez was the most badly hurt; suffering a severe concussion. She will be out of work for days, Delaney says.
A total of nine people were arrested and are scheduled to be arraigned Monday at Springfield District Court:
Allan Wilson, 24, of Springfield
Miguel Offray, 26, of Springfield
Gisette Lopez, 25, of Chicopee
Christopher Braun, 33, of Manchester, Conn.
Madeline Lopez, 26, of Springfield
Tiffany Pizzaro, 21, of Springfield
Hector Diaz, 24, of San Leizario, Texas
