"End of the world" Mayan prophecy

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - December 21st, 2012. It's the date on which the 5,125 year Mayan calendar ends. Some believe it signals the end of all humanity. But then there are those who completely dismiss this prophecy.

"I don't believe that the world is going to end. I would say, 'check your facts'...", said Ellen Baldwin of Northampton.

Even if you don't buy into this "date of doom", it's hard to ignore the hype. On Thursday night, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Springfield held a special mass and forum to discuss the history behind these ancient predictions in Christianity. Perhaps the most surprising response to the myth though was from NASA. The government agency created a web page this week, solely dedicated to debunking the theories.

"I've always listened to things about Nostradamus and the Mayan calendar. There have always been documentaries and various predictions. but I'm not concerned at all. If it is, there's nothing we can do anyways...", said Angela Perez of Ware.

But hypothetically speaking, what would you do if you knew the end was coming? Jim Pieciak of Three Rivers told 22News that he'd be home waiting it out with those he loves the most. "I'd probably spend time with my family and cherish those moment", said Pieciak

The Mayan calendar expires at 11:11 AM Eastern Time.
