Car crashed into their porch Saturday night

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Springfield family's porch is now barely standing after a car crashed into their home Saturday night.

A quiet Saturday night turned into a nightmare for the Mateo family in Springfield. Just as they got ready to go to bed, a car crashed into their home at 344 White Street.

Angelica Mateo who was enjoying the end of her February vacation told 22News "I heard like a big commotion going on. At first I thought it was heavy snow. I was surprised and scared that the car crashed into the porch."

Eugenia Mateo said "I had a very bad headache... But I'm okay now."

No one in the house was hurt, but five people in the car were taken to Baystate Medical Center.

Eugenia told 22News "We were very scared last night. Police and the firefighters spent about 2-3 hours trying to get the people out of the car."

And after a sleepless night, the Mateo family now needs new beams to support the front of their house.

Tom Wehr from Associated Building Wreckers came out to survey the damage Sunday morning.

Wehr said "Right now all the weight is laying on the car. The upper deck... the weight is on it. So we have to make sure that the weight is braced up properly so it won't drop."

Unfortunately this isn't an isolated incident. Just in the last six months, 22News has reported on at least three accidents in Springfield where drivers lose control and crash into homes.

Neighbors told 22News they hope drivers now slow down for everyone's safety.

Cody Flanigan who lives next door said,  "I'm outside with my dogs. I can see cars going by 50-60 miles per hour. There are kids that walk to school every day. Half the time, sidewalks aren't shoveled right away, so they are in the road. So it's bad it's not good at all."
