SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - 23 year-old Tory Bryant of Springfield was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly setting a house on fire with his mother and daughter inside.
Police Captain Cheryl Claprood told 22News that Bryant's mother, Rosalyn, tried to stop her son from hitting his 5 year-old daughter. The father became upset and started arguing with his mom. Rosalyn, who has custody of her granddaughter, asked her son to leave the house. He then went downstairs to the basement, and came back upstairs shortly after, leaving the house.
Around 5:30 P.M. police and firefighters were called to the home on 286 Rosewell Ave. after smoke detectors started going off. The mother said she saw smoke coming from the basement.
She and her granddaughter were able to make it out safely, as well as another child who was inside the home at the time.
Bryant was arrested within the hour and charged with arson and three counts of attempted murder. He will be arraigned at Springfield District Court Thursday morning.
