SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - No one ever thinks they'll one day have to get a divorce but sometimes it's the harsh reality. One legal group is helping people understand the complicated process.

February is often the most active month for divorce. This life changing event is often very emotional.

David Callahan, Managing Attorney at Massachusetts Family Law Group said, “A lot of times it's the worst possible situation they could be going through.  We try to alleviate some of that stress, tell them it's going to get better.”

That's why this law group is holding seminars to teach people who to plan and prepare for what they call the "harsh reality of divorce."

The family law group receives about 40 phone calls a day from people looking for legal advice.

The rate of marriages ending in divorce is still around 50% but this is just another reality today.

“There are more two income households, there are more dual working parents, the internet is there the world's moving a lot faster,” said Irwin Pollack, President of the Massachusetts Family Law Group.

So this free seminar helped people understand how to avoid common mistakes, survive the process and come out in the best shape possible.

Divorce can be a complicated process and in most cases, a couple is only getting a settlement once and they say planning increases the likelihood of a successful divorce outcome for all those affected.

“Roles of husband and wife may end but the roles of mom and dad never go away,” said Pollack.

The group is holding other seminars throughout the state.
