SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Mourners gathered Friday for a solemn goodbye to a young firefighter who died last weekend.

Funeral services for Kenneth Murray, III began at St. Catherine of Siena Church at 11:30 Friday morning.

An honor guard ushered Murray's casket into the church for the funeral. Bagpipes played and fellow firefighters saluted in respect.

Following the memorial Mass, Murray's body was brought to its final resting place at Hillcrest Park Cemetery.

Murray was killed in a car accident on Cottage Street on Sunday, January 27 . The 23 year-old firefighter was among those who had been injured in the natural gas explosion in downtown Springfield back in November. He had been on medical leave from the injuries at the time of the crash.

The young firefighter was the son of Springfield Police Sgt. Kenneth Murray.
