Fire Marshal urges residents to dispose of Christmas trees soon

STOW, Mass. (WWLP) - State fire officials are urging homeowners to get rid of their Christmas trees as soon as possible, to avoid potential fire damage.

The earlier your Christmas tree went up this year, the drier it is now, and therefore, the more likely it is to go up in flames. State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says that last year, the state recorded several fires that involved dry Christmas trees left inside homes after the holiday season.

Coan also says that old Christmas trees make homes potential targets for arsonists.
