MONSON, Mass. (WWLP) - A Monson man is crediting his two dogs with alerting him about a fire at his Waid Road home.
Bill Fountain says he was sleeping after a night of plowing when his dogs began barking loudly around 11 Wednesday morning. That's when he noticed his barn was on fire.
Fountain says he first tried to put out the fire using a garden hose, but it spread too quickly. He was, however, able to save some of his things.
Fountain told 22News, “I lost an antique truck but the most important thing was getting my brother's Harley out, he got killed on it in ’04, which I was able to get out and it was the only thing that meant anything to me.”
Monson Fire Chief Laurent McDonald told 22News it appears the fire started in a wood pile and then spread to the barn.
Firefighters from Hampden, Palmer and Wilbraham were also called in to help with the lack of water in the area.
