SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - 18 people have died in Massachusetts because of the flu.
But experts say the worst of the flu season may be over.
During the first week of January the number of people visiting doctor's offices with flu-like symptoms decreased, which is a sign that the flu season may have reached its peak.
But that doesn't necessarily mean that everything can now go back to normal.
In Boston, a child has died after being diagnosed with the flu, although it's not confirmed yet if that was the direct cause of the death.
However, with at least 700 confirmed cases of the flu in Massachusetts, health officials say people should continue to take precautions to avoid the illness.
A healthy balanced diet, along with getting enough sleep, should boost your immune system.
So if you do get sick, your symptoms will not be as severe.
Flu shots are recommended for everyone - especially the elderly, children and pregnant women.
You can get flu shots at your doctor's office and local pharmacies.
Today there is a free flu clinic in Northampton at Greenfield Savings Bank on King Street from 9 am to noon.
