CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Great New England Air Show will fill the sky over Westover Air Reserve Base this weekend.
From the ground the show promises to be pretty spectacular, but Thursday, 22News Anchor Elysia Rodriguez got a preview of what it's like from the air.
During World War II the T-6 Texans, also known as SNJ's were popular training aircrafts.
Pilot Jim Record told 22News, “Every single military pilot, navy air force marine corps army all flew t-6's this was the advance training. Supposedly the toughest one to fly so when you got to fly the other stuff it was easy."
Now, these planes are part of a precision flight team called the Geico Skytypers.
Just days before the Great New England Air Show at Westover Air Reserve Base 22News Anchor Elysia Rodriguez had a chance to see what it's like to fly with the team.
Each of the aircrafts is in constant communication with each other from takeoff to landing.
Record said, "We do everything in formation we tag team in formation we do everything in formation."
In some cases they fly only a couple of feet away from each other to achieve different formations.
The planes also are used for sky typing and are able to make aerial smoke messages.
