WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - With our recent storm and shortages of gas in parts of the country, gas cans have been in tight supply.
Gas cans have been a popular item in stores lately, and in many stores they're completely sold out.
Gas cans are a helpful way to store extra gas in case of emergencies, but there are strict rules in using them.
The only way to transport gas for storage is in a specific gas can made for holding gas, using other containers is illegal.
Gas cans are color coded, red gas cans are used for regular gasoline, and yellow cans are used to carry diesel gasoline.
If you transport gas in your car, it can't go just anywhere.
"You're absolutely not supposed to be putting them in the back seat or anything, because of the fumes. You should have them in the trunk and you should make sure that they're stable and won't knock over in your vehicle,” Gary Leyden Manager of Welker Tire and Alignment said.
According to lieutenant fire inspector Scott Mitchell of the Agawam fire department, you're only allowed to transport 21 gallons of gas, and unless your car has a separate trunk, not attached to the passenger seating space, you can't transport gas.
When storing gasoline, do it in a ventilated area and don't store for longer than a year or your gas may not work correctly.
