Gas prices hit $4 per gallon mark in WMass

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - It was not supposed to happen at this time of the year, but gas prices have hit the dreaded $4.00 per gallon mark in parts of western Massachusetts.

22News traveled to Holyoke on Wednesday morning, where regular unleaded gas at the Shell station at Whiting Farms Road and Lower Westfield Road is selling for $4.05 per gallon with cash, and $4.15 with a credit card.

In Feeding Hills Center, prices are only slightly better, with gas under $4.00, but just barely. Gas at the stations at Routes 57 and 187 is selling for $3.97 per gallon.

The recent sharp increase in the price of gas is contrary to what many analysts were predicting during the summer months, that with the passing of the Labor Day Weekend and the return of production at refineries in the Gulf of Mexico, gas prices would go down.

Higher gas prices worry small businesses that depend on making deliveries. Bob Fox, the owner of Southwick Florists, told 22News that it makes it hard to hold the line on delivery charges.

"That's when the accountant turns around and tells us looking at our books it's time to go up on your delivery charges. That's when we have to make that call," he said.
