WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Residents in West Springfield have been allowed to return to their homes after they were forced to evacuate, due to a gas leak.

Deputy Fire Chief Joe Sawyer told 22News at 8:45PM Saturday, a person walking by 625 Union Street smelled gas coming from the building.

A Columbia Gas worker probed near the door, and according to Deputy Chief Sawyer, got a reading that was just below the explosive level.

13 homes on Union and George Street were evacuated and Union Street was blocked off from Day to Sprague Street.

Chief Sawyer said the building was vacant, and used to be a flower shop.

He said a problem in an underground gas pipe caused the gas to build up inside the abandoned building.

Firefighters removed plywood from the windows and were able to vent the gas.

Columbia Gas Workers are digging through the Street to try and correct the problem.
