Habitat for Humanity builds homes for tornado victims

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The June 1st tornado caused destruction throughout the lower Pioneer Valley and families are still trying to recover.

For the first time, we're getting a look inside the homes that Habitat for Humanity has built for tornado victims.

Four local families, the Guerreros, the Rosarios, the Jones and Holston families had homes built for them after their own homes were destroyed on June 1st of last year.

All the homes were built with the same design. They were all built in Springfield with an incredibly energy-efficient design. This means that each family will be able to heat or cool their new home for under $1000 a year.

Walter Tomala, V.P. of Habitat for Humanity, Springfield, said, "It's just been fantastic to be able to oversee all of them, to see how they grow and to see their faces, their reactions as the completion comes to an end here and they're ready to move in."

The Habitat for Humanity team is confident they'll get the four families into their new homes before Christmas day.

The completion of these four homes marked the 50th home that Habitat for Humanity has built in this area.
