HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - A hazardous materials team was called-in to test a mysterious liquid left in an alley in Holyoke’s Flats section Monday afternoon.

Holyoke Fire Department Lt. Tom Paquin told 22News that bottles of an unknown fluid were found in an alley behind 49 North Summer Street.

The fire and police departments, as well as the state Department of Environmental Protection, were called-in to investigate.

Samples of the liquid were taken and tested on-site, but Lt. Paquin says that the nature of the substance remains unclear, and the containers will be brought to a lab for further testing.

The area was cleared by the hazardous materials team by mid-afternoon, and traffic is again moving in the area.
