AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Summer is finally here in Western Massachusetts and already the heat is starting to pose as a threat--especially to the elderly.

"I try to drink a lot of water, I try to wear a hat if I'm outdoors, and I try not to go outdoors too often because it's just the humidity and everything--it's tough", said Jim Mahoney of Agawam.

Agawam resident, Edy Chiba said that when the temperatures rise, so do her concerns...

"I do think about other people who have problems and don't really know how to deal with them. And those kind of people I worry about", said Chiba.

Dr. Maura Brennan, of Baystate Medical Center, told 22News that people need to be alert of the signs of dehydration and heat stroke in the elderly.

"If older people and their family members notice that they're becoming sort of more lethargic or confused, starting to develop headaches-then they ought to be evaluated", said Dr. Brennan.

So 22News is working for you with some tips on how you can stay cool in this hot weather:
  1) First and foremost, make sure to stay well hydrated...
  2) Reduce any strenuous activities (especially between 10am-2pm)...
  3) Try and wear light-colored clothes...
  4) Spend time in an air--conditioned area...
  5) Take a cold bath or shower
