High unemployment will remain a problem for election's winner, economists say

4 more years of unemployment over 6%

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - No matter who wins November’s election, it could be four more years of high unemployment.

A new survey of economists showed that a majority think the country's unemployment rate will stay above six percent. That level is the upper limit of what's considered healthy.

Unemployment is a big challenge for whoever wins the presidential election in November, but some say it's unfair to put sole blame on the president.

"I really believe that and I'm wicked sick of him being put down like they do. Nasty politics, but yeah I think it's (unemployment’s) doing better,” Bob Sachen of Chicopee said. "Look at the parking lots, they're busy, everything is busy, the restaurants are busy.”

If the economists are correct, this would be the longest stretch of high unemployment since the end of World War II.
