CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - NHL officials are scolding hockey fans who tweeted racist comments directed at Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward.
The black Canadian player scored an overtime goal Wednesday night that eliminated the Boston Bruins from the Stanley Cup Playoffs .
Disappointed fans posted their reaction on Twitter, using the n-word at Ward.
22News spoke exclusively with Ward's agent, Peter Cooney, who said he is shocked and saddened by the comments.
"I understand freedom of speech. I understand they're way across the line and I wish these people couldn't hide behind a veil of being anonymous because they wouldn't have the guts to stand up and say it in public," Cooney told 22News.
Cooney says Ward isn't let the racist comments faze him and that he will continue to play the best hockey he can.
The Bruins also released a statement saying, "these classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization."
