HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Holyoke has broken ground on a new public library.
Thursday, a large crowd gathered for the announcement outside of the historic library on Maple Street. Library-goers say the current building does not have adequate space and the new library will be part of the revitalization for the city.
At one point in the ceremony it was said, "Before third grade, students learn to read, from then on they read to learn." Helping students and youth is a main purpose of the $14.5 million renovation project.
“The experience throughout the country shows that public libraries are very important to youth, to everybody but especially to youth as part of their educational system,” said Tom Schwab of the Holyoke Library Board of Directors.
Renovations are expected to take two years. The library will be relocated to the City Hall Auditorium during the construction.
