Holyoke police hold Halloween tradition

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Kids in Holyoke were stuck inside on Halloween night, as the town continued to clean up after Hurricane Sandy.

But Saturday night was finally their chance to get into costume and collect some candy. Holyoke Police officers have started their own tradition this year, by inviting kids to trick or treat at their community police station at the corner of Maple and Sargeant Streets.

Patrolman Patrick Leahy said, “We've been here for about a year so we're getting to know a lot of the kids. A lot of the kids stop into the office anyway. A lot of the outreach that we do is for the children so they know we are the people they can come to when they need help and they shouldn't be afraid of us.”

Folks in Monson also had to postpone Halloween after Sandy's winds knocked down trees and power lines. Monson's Board of Selectmen rescheduled trick-or-treating until Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00.
