CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - A family of three lost their Chicopee home in an early morning fire.

Deupty Fire Chief James McInerny told 22News that a neighbor saw flames shooting from the roof of the house at 24 Bernard Street, and called 911.

22News got there to find the flames 30-40 feet high.

Firefighters went inside the home, but were called out. The roof partially collapsed.

A neighbor who lives nearby told 22News that the heaviest damage looks to be near the kitchen and living room.

Neighbors say three people lived in the home. A man, woman and daughter. Deputy Chief McInerny said the man had to be "evacuated" from the home. He was put in an ambulance and taken to the hospital. It's not known if he was hurt.

The family also had a dog, which was seen being taken care of by emergency personnel.

During the fire, the Chicopee Electric Light Department was also called to shut off utilities to the home.

One neighbor told 22News that when she saw the fire, she was concerned that the fire trucks wouldn't be able to get down the narrow street. Huge snowbanks from the recent Nor'Easter have made the road even more narrow.

The investigation is being handled by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
