Hundreds of drivers stopped for texting

Ban went into effect last fall in Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Young Springfield area drivers speak out against texting while out on the open road.

Critics of texting and driving at the same time are disappointed that since the texting ban took effect last fall, hundreds of drivers have been stopped for texting.

Younger drivers told 22News Sunday why they think so many texting drivers just flaunt the law.

“I just think texting has just become second nature to a lot of people. When they see the phone light up next time they think they can just do it really quick at a light or something, but it's very unsafe,” said Claire Martin of Northampton.

“I don't understand what the miscommunication is. You can't look at the phone and look at the road at the same time. And you can kill a lot of people. I've seen little girls just run across the road. It's ridiculous to text and drive,” said Jose Gonzalez of Holyoke.

Some people concerned about safety on Springfield area highways have even suggested banning cell phones in cars altogether, one way of eliminating a driving distraction.
