Hurricane Sandy animals up for adoption

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - There are some animals who need new homes after Hurricane Sandy destroyed theirs.

Ten cats were sent to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society this week from a shelter in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

When Hurricane Sandy approached the East Coast, many residents were told to evacuate. But not everyone listened to the warnings.

As a result, animal rescue teams spent days trying to save thousands of animals. Many animals are accounted for, but there are still some without a home and their owners. Not all evacuation shelters allowed pets.

In New Jersey, about 200 pets are in a temporary shelter run by the Humane Society. Others have been shipped to shelters throughout the Northeast--including the Dakin shelter in Springfield.

Dakin's Candy Lash told 22News that they took the cats in to help out neighboring communities. That's exactly what was done for us when western Massachusetts was hit with two natural disasters, last year.

"We're very happy to be able to return the favor to another area that's hard hit, when folks stepped up and helped us when we had a tornado in 2011. So it's our pleasure to be able to do that and we're hoping our community will help in that effort as well," said Lash.

On Tuesday, the Springfield shelter is holding a special "name your price" event for cats that are 6 months and older.
