Hurricane Sandy: Getting prepared

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A lot can still change with Hurricane Sandy. But if history is any indication here in New England, being prepared can go a long way.

Putting together an emergency kit is never a bad idea.

Recommended items include:

• Batteries
• Flashlight
• Weather radio
• Two-way radio (walkie-talkie)
• Duct tape
• First aid kit
• Waterproof plastic bags
• Bottled water
• Nonperishable foods

On Wednesday, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency issued a 'Situational Awareness Statement.' In it, they say Sandy could bring high winds associated with power outages, heavy rain, and both coastal and river and stream flooding.

M.E.M.A. is also offering their own tips for residents on how to prepare. They say it's a good idea to have cash on hand. In the event of a power outage, Many ATM's don't work. It's also a good idea to fill up your car with gas.

If you don't own a car charger for your cell phone. Getting one is not a bad idea. In the event of a power outage it may be the only way to keep your phone battery charged.

M.E.M.A. recommends you trim tree branches and shrubs, clear clogged rain gutters, elevate items in your basement in case of flooding and make temporary plywood covering for windows and doors.
