If MGM, Penn move on, vote on same day

BOSTON (WWLP) - At a meeting on Tuesday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted unanimously to require host community elections for multiple applicants in same host community to be held on the same day.

That means if Springfield decides to sign host community agreements with both MGM and Penn National Gaming, that referendum would have to take place on the same day.

Springfield has been negotiating with both casino developers; MGM in the South End, Penn National Gaming in the North End.  Springfield's Economic Development Director Kevin Kennedy has told 22News that he believes it would be in the cities best interest to move forward with only one proposal.  That would likely make the Gaming Commission's decision moot.

June 25th has been discussed as a potential voting day since it falls on the same day as the U.S. Senate special election.  Although, a referendum must take place within 60 days of a city and developer agreeing on a host community agreement.
