SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - This has been Super Sunday, that one day each year when phone volunteers reach out to families to help the Springfield Jewish Federation's biggest fundraising event.
A team of volunteers at the Springfield Jewish Community Center called Jewish families throughout western Massachusetts for donations that provide money for dozens of social service agencies both locally and in countries all over the world.
11-year old Stephanya Moran is the youngest of the more than 100 people who volunteered. She told 22News, she was happy to make a difference. "It makes me feel great because at school it's required to do 10 hours of volunteering. But I don't think it really matters how many hours you do because I love to volunteer."
Many of the volunteers have been donating their time on Super Sunday for years. And for many of them this is a family tradition that they're pleased to continue. "You have a lot of organizations that help out people in need, Jews and non-Jews alike. I know my kids have been involved, my parents so I wanted to continue," said Jonna Gaberman.
And as they called and the community came through, the donations kept adding up. The Jewish Federation has been conducting this phon-a-thon for 85 years, and it's their biggest fundraiser of the year.
