Jeffrey Asher no longer in jail

Former officer now in day reporting center

(WWLP) - Former Springfield police officer Jeffrey Asher is no longer in jail.

Hampden County Sheriff's Department spokesman Rich McCarthy told 22News Asher is now in the Day Reporting Center.  This means that Asher can live at home, but he must check in at least once a day. Every time he leaves his house, it must be pre-approved and scheduled.  McCarthy describes it as a "lesser level of security."

Asher is also subjected to random tests of his locations and random drug and alcohol screenings.

In March, Asher was sentenced to 18 months in jail for the beating of Melvin Jones, III during a traffic stop.

Asher returned home on Monday.  McCarthy calls this a stage of community re-entry.  In two to six months, Asher will be eligible for full parole.

The former officer will also be put on probation for two years following his sentence, and will have to take anger management treatment. He will have to pay a monthly fee for the probation.
