SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - One of the Springfield Police Department's newest members has made his first arrest.

Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that officer "Blek", a police dog helped track a suspect who ran from police during a domestic disturbance early Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Delaney says "Blek" was able to help track the scent of the suspect, Adrian Velez who was later found hiding under a porch on Brookline Avenue.

Adrian Velez is charged with domestic assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

There are 7 police dogs in the city. The department hopes to get two more in the spring.
