Kerry in Springfield to say thanks to supporters

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Senator John Kerry came to Springfield on Thursday, making a stop on a final tour across the state to thank supporters as he gets ready for a new job at the State Department.

The Boston Democrat, who was confirmed by the Senate this week as Secretary of State, greeted longtime backers at Youthbuild on Clough Street. Among those in attendance at the event were Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and Congressman Richard Neal (D-Springfield).

The Springfield stop was the first in a day-long “thank you tour,” which will also include visits with supporters in Worcester and Boston.

First elected to the Senate in 1984, Kerry had previously served as Lieutenant Governor under Gov. Michael Dukakis. Kerry had relied on support from western Massachusetts in several contested campaigns, including a tight 1996 Senate race against then- Governor William Weld, and a 2004 run for President.

Kerry will be officially sworn-in as Secretary of State on Friday. William “Mo” Cowan, former Chief of Staff to Governor Deval Patrick, has been chosen to replace Kerry in the Senate until after a June 25 special election.

Kerry said he will remember Massachusetts as he serves in his new role, and it isn't a goodbye but rather the start of a new chapter.
