SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A big pothole problem Friday but I-91 South in downtown Springfield is now safe to drive on.
During the commuter rush Friday morning a chunk of concrete came loose near exit four causing large potholes.
Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Alan Joubert told 22News, six cars got flat tires before Department of Transportation workers fixed the road.
Springfield Public Works Superintendent Allan Chwalek said potholes can develop when water seeps into the area where steel beams touch highway concrete at an I-91 underpass.
Chwalek told 22News, those steel beams expand and contract depending on the weather.
