Life returns to normal on West Street in Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The area surrounding a standoff and shootout in Chicopee that left a state trooper injured and the suspect dead is quiet once again.

On West Street, windows are boarded up and there are visible bullet holes, but beyond that and the occasional curious bystander, things are returning to normal. Busy Center Street was open to commuter traffic; the Shell station and Dunkin' Donuts that had windows shot out Friday had customers pumping gas and filing in and out for coffee again.

Chicopee residents like Jesus Marino hope this one incident won't scar the way people view their city.

"I’ve been here 11 years and nothing this big has ever happened. It’s rare to see this thing, you don’t see fights or gang violence, so I love it," Marino said.

Trooper John Vasquez was released from Baystate Medical Center over the weekend, after being shot in the hand and leg during Friday morning’s standoff.
