CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Local Catholic women are reacting to the controversy surrounding a plan that would require Catholic-run organizations to offer insurance coverage for birth control.

The plan by the Obama Administration is coming under fire by Catholic Bishops and has sparked reaction from Washington all the way to the campaign trail.

One point that is being made on this issue all across the country is the difference between what the Bishops are saying and what Catholics are actually practicing.

According to the group, Catholics for Choice, 98-percent of Catholic women use birth control.

"Myself, I've been on birth control even though I'm Catholic so I don't totally believe," said Lynn Will of Chicopee.

Laurette Sutherland of Chicopee says she stopped practicing Catholicism because of these controversial issues.

"I'd rather have women have abortions and take birth control then have a whole bunch of unwanted children running around and life is hard enough. That's why I'm a lapsed Catholic. I had to make a choice rather than be a hypocrite, " said Sutherland.

The White House has responded saying that the President wants to put the right policies for women in place across the country.
