WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A new report shows that Massachusetts students are global leaders in math and science.
West Springfield 8th grader Brandon Cassesse admits he’s not the best in math. However, he’s ahead of the curve.
The 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study reveals Massachusetts 8th graders are among the top in the world.
Students tied for second in science trailing only students from Singapore, a place that Massachusetts schools have looked to emulate.
Superintendent to West Springfield Public Schools, Dr. Russell Johnston said, “To look at what's happening across the world, particularly the math program in Singapore has really influenced the curriculum here in Massachusetts.”
In Math, Massachusetts students tied for fifth behind countries like Hong Kong and Korea.
Students in West Springfield are urged to become engaged and much of the learning is hands-on.
“It's easier to understand because if you just give them a long problem, they get confused but if you put it into real life they think more logically for them to understand it,” said Cassesse.
This is encouraging a passion in future careers.
Rebecca Bryant, Chair of the Science Department at West Springfield Middle School said, “It's going to inspire students to really think about picking a career in the world of science somewhere, whether it's doctor or nurse, engineer, and technology.”
And Brandon will need science in the future since he plans to be a nurse one day.
Since 1999, Massachusetts students have made the biggest gains of any participating country in Math, and second highest gains in science.
