Spfld stand-off ends, man taken away

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Police ended a close to five hour stand-off with a potentially dangerous suspect around 4pm Saturday afternoon. 

Springfield Police Lt. Robert Moynihan told 22News police and tatical teams surrounded an apartment building at 228 Locust Street, near Woodside Terrace Saturday afternoon.  The building is in the South End of the city.  An unidentified man barricaded himself in an apartment building.  Lt. Moynihan told 22News the man was unstable and made threats that he would kill himself or shoot any police officer.

Neighbors told 22News the man was in the street naked before going into an apartment building. 

At 4pm police entered the apartment and subdued the man.  The man was hiding in his bedroom.  No one was injured. He was brought out on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance.

Police are not releasing the man's name because this is now a medical issue. The man has not been arrested.  He is committed to the Psychiatric Ward at BayState Medical Center.
