SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - For the first time in 24 years, primary elections in Massachusetts will be held on a Thursday.
This is the first year since 1988 when primaries are held on a Thursday, before then it hadn't happened since 1964.
Spokesman for the Secretary of State, Brian McNiff, told 22News the change is due to Labor Day and the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah. This year, both holidays fall before or on the Tuesday usually selected for the state primary. 22News spoke with voters, some were aware of the change, others weren't.
“I think there will be a little bit of confusion but I think that it's pretty well publicized so I don't think it makes that much of a difference,” Charlotte Millman said.
“Did you know that primaries are on Thursday instead of a Tuesday?” “No. I'm glad you told me, I'll spread the word,” Carin Baldwin said.
Mark your calendars, state primaries will be held Thursday, September, 6th. Polling locations will be open from 7AM- 8PM. To find your polling location by name, visit www.cityofboston.gov/elections/voter/
