SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Casino developer MGM International is donating $50,000 to Springfield’s South End Community Center, an institution on whose former site they hope to build an $800 million resort casino.

The Las Vegas-based casino company announced that they would be making the donation Thursday afternoon on Morris Street, where the Community Center is building its new location . Chairman and CEO Jim Murren will make the presentation.

The South End Community Center was located in the former armory building on Howard Street until the June 1 tornado destroyed much of the structure.

MGM’s plan has them developing a casino in a 10-acre area along Main Street between State and Union Streets. This includes the former South End Community Center site; the façade of which will be preserved under plans released on August 22.

MGM is just one of four developers that have expressed an interest in a Springfield casino. Ameristar Casinos wants to build on the former Westinghouse property in East Springfield, Penn National Gaming has expressed interest in a casino in the city’s North End, and Hard Rock International has also indicated interest in a Springfield casino, though they have not specified a location.
