SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - MGM is moving forward with their plans to bring a resort-style casino near downtown Springfield.
At 11:00 AM on Wednesday, the Las Vegas-based company is set to unveil design plans at the MassMutual Center. A tour of the proposed casino site is also planned for the day.
MGM had been searching for a new site, after it abandoned plans earlier in the year to develop a casino in Brimfield. But as of last month, the company has set their sights on Springfield's historic South End district at Main Street--between State and Union Streets.
MGM executives say they have options to buy up all the properties covered in that area. But first, they'd have to win the casino license bid.
At least three other developers are also interested in building a casino in the city, including Ameristar Casinos . That company presented plans to Springfield's Casino Site Committee on Monday night. A spokesperson for Ameristar told 22News that they expect to have more information from the city, regarding the bidding process, on August 27th.
Also competing for the Western Mass. casino license is Mohegan Sun . It wants to build a resort-style casino in Palmer.
