SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Springfield Police Officer was killed in the line of duty, after responding to a call in the Sixteen Acres neighborhood. 22News is learning more about a restraining order that was granted right before the shooting.

29 year-old Charlene Mitchell received a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, 35 year-old Shawn Bryan, just 30 minutes before the shooting took place.

She became worried for her safety, as Bryan got his belongings from her apartment, so she called 9-1-1.

When Officer Kevin Ambrose arrived, he tried to talk to the estranged couple, but Bryan became violent and locked himself in the apartment with his ex-girlfriend.

While Officer Ambrose tried to get inside, Bryan shot him through the door, then opened the door and shot him again before shooting Mitchell. Bryan then went to his car, where he fatally shot himself.

Mitchell was taken to Baystate Medical Center and was listed in critical condition, but has since been transferred to another hospital.

22News found out from the restraining order that Bryan was a correctional officer on Rikers Island in New York City, and was legally allowed to carry a gun.

Also in that order, Mitchell said:

"Shawn has been physical to me, he has always told me that he is crazy and his head is not good. I have had problems with him from the day we started to date."

The couple had two children together.

Meantime, Western Massachusetts is honoring, remembering, and mourning the loss of fallen hero, Officer Kevin Ambrose . He is not only a 36-year police veteran, but a beloved father and grandfather.

The last time a Springfield officer was killed in the line of duty was back in 1985. That's when Officers Alan Beauregard and Michael Schiavina were shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on Stebbens Street.
