New England has seismically active areas

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - It's a disturbing thought; New england is not immune to sizable seismic activity.

Mount Holyoke College Geology Professor Mark McMenamin told 22News that no one can predict when an earthquake will hit, or how strong it will be. But New England has seismically active areas to our north in Canada, to our east, off the coast, and south and west of us too.

"We haven't had a giant event, and we don't have a high frequency of these kinds of events. But eventually one will strike us. We just don't know when, he said.

Professor McMenamin said Japan is well prepared for earthquakes, and that many lives were saved Friday morning because their seismic system gave the people a one minute warning on the television.
