SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - There are some new laws starting January 1st in Massachusetts.
22News reveals one that you may notice in your supermarket.
Beginning January 1st, food stores in Massachusetts do not have to put individual price stickers on everything they're selling.
Store owners can put their pricing guns away. They still have to display the price on shelves and place price scanners throughout their store. You can then scan each item to see how much it costs. Consumer Advocates opposed the law, saying that scanners can be unreliable.
"Sometimes the prices on the shelf turn out to be wrong, and you're very disappointed at the
register when you have $100 in food and you thought you had $50", says East Longmeadow's John Polchloeek.
The new law requires the clear price of the items to be placed on shelves and one self-scanner to be available for every 5000 square feet of store space.
If there is a price dispute between the scanner and checkout price, the consumer gets the item at the lower price and If it's under $10, it's free.
